About Us

Alkina began in 2007 . With the help of Non-Government Organisations responsible for developing small businesses, we started business relationships with 4 skilled artisans wanting to develop their exports and improve family incomes.

Alkina is committed to Ethical Trading and Fair Trade principles and works closely with artisans on design and product development ensuring quality control.

Abedlaati El Nejjar has been a weaver since he was 7 years old and now, in his forties, has had many years experience and produces exquisite work using colour and texture to great effect.

Ahmed El Guerche is one of many silversmiths in the town of Tiznit. Tiznit has been the home of skilled silversmiths for centuries and Ahmed has a great respect for and knowledge of the traditional designs of the jewellery of the region. He uses the finest sterling silver to produce his wonderful pieces. Ahmed is also very keen to develop his own modern designs.

Alkina's genuine leather products are made in 2 small workshops in Marrakech. Ahmed Zizeh and Ahmed Hamid have many years experience of leather work and are very skilled in adapting traditional techniques to modern design. Using the finest leathers they produce work that is both fashionable but distinctly Moroccan.

After recent travels to Mali, Alkina began to work with jewellers based in Timbuktu and Mopti. Mohamed lives 3 days camel ride from Timbuktu and makes exquisite pieces from his desert village using quality materials, sterling silver, amber and ebony. Mikailou works from La Marche des Femmes in Mopti. Check out his stunning twisted Filani necklace and other wonderful beaded necklaces.

Alkina buys directly from producers and so is able to bring unique, high quality accessories to shoppers at a reasonable price and at the same time ensure producers are paid a fair price for the skilled work they do.
